Deltics at Shildon

All six surviving production Deltic locomotives will be re-united at the National Railway Museum in Shildon at a special event to be held between 8^th and 9^th October 2011. They will join the prototype Deltic which is permanently displayed at Shildon.

The last time all six production versions were together was at Barrow Hill on August 11^th 2006 and by arranging this years event to take place at Shildon will give the opportunity for the six to be seen alongside the prototype which, although restored externally, is not operational and unlikely ever to work under its own power again.

The prototype was introduced in 1955 and operated initially on the West Coast mainline. In 1959 Deltic transferred to the East Coast mainline until 1961, when it was withdrawn after a power plant failure, having covered over 450,000 miles.

After 20 years on display at the Science Museum in London, the prototype Deltic was moved to the National Railway Museum at York in October 1993 from where it was eventually moved to Shildon.

News Technology,HTC Evo View 4G Tablet Features Scribe Digital Pen-Has Sprint (NYSE:S) become the ultimate purveyor of mobile devices steeped in clever gimmicks?It sure seems that way,but if the devices are gimmicky,they're also a whole lot of fun.
First was the Kyocera Echo dual-screen Android smartphone,which launched in April. On June 24,Sprint rolled out two new novelty devices on its 4G WiMAX network: the HTC Evo 3D 4G smartphone and the HTC Evo View 4G tablet computer.

The Evo 3D 4G,which I reviewed last week, has two 5MP cameras to enable 3D photos and video creation and consumption. 3D viewing without glasses is pretty cool.
The Evo View 4G, which I just spent the last week using as my personal tablet,has a much different trick.The tablet lets users take notes with the well-crafted HTC Scribe digital pen and save them, or just scribble all over the screens in fits of whimsy. Users can save those doodles, too.

This is my favorite feature of the tablet, which is why I mentioned it up-front. I'll circle back to it later after I hash out the specs.

The View 4G is petite in length (less than 8 inches) and width (less than 4.5 inches) but chunky in the middle at slightly more than a half-inch thick. The device also mercifully weighs less than 15 ounces. Anytime you get a tablet under a pound it's a bonus.

The View 4G is encased in nondescript soft, gray plastic and features the same rounded edges as most of its smartphones, such as the aforementioned Evo 3D 4G and ThunderBolt 4G. The tablet feels really comfortable in one palm and is super-manageable with two hands.

Right out of the box, I had two strong reservations about this tablet. My first concern was its 7-inch screen (1024 by 600 resolution) real estate, a form factor I became familiar with from the original Galaxy Tab and more recently RIM's (NASDAQ:RIMM) Blackberry PlayBook.

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad set the standard with 9.7 inches of bold, beautiful tabletry. The Motorola Mobility (NASDAQ:MMI) Xoom's 10.1 inches of screen and the Samsung Galaxy Tab's 10.1 went a bit farther and proved the ideal size for me.

My second concern was the OS. "Gingerbread" was built for smartphones, while the Xoom and Tab 10.1 use Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" branch, built specifically with the larger tablet form factor in mind.

HTC and Sprint said that the View 4G will get the Honeycomb bump, but that won't be until the launch later this year of Honeycomb 3.2, which is tailored for tablets of 7 inches.

However, Gingerbread performed well for most of the applications I tested here, particularly those wed to the HTC Sense 2.1 user interface HTC designed specially for its tablets. Facebook and Twitter for HTC Sense were a pleasure to use, as was Foursquare, YouTube and Angry Birds.

Canaccord Genuity analyst Heath Terry said Google's mobile sales,largely driven by search and display ads served on Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone,as well as via smartphones based on the company's Android mobile operating system,will comprise a robust $2.5 billion in 2011.
That sum, which might have seemed incredible before Android launched in 2008,appears modest next to Terry's forecast for $14 billion by 2015.

Google's growth is expected to rev up exponentially, thanks to the perfect proliferation of mobile, social and local applications on handheld devices consumers carry with them wherever they go.

Smartphone sales continue to grow,and researchers such as Gartner and IDC expect Google's market share to top 40 percent this year and beyond.
Moreover,IDC expects the market for mobile applications to accelerate from 10.9 billion application downloads globally in 2010 to 76.9 billion in 2014. Moreover, mobile-application revenues are projected to grow to $35 billion by 2014. More devices and applications sold means more ads Google can serve to consumers using the hardware and software.

Indeed, Gartner said the global mobile-ad market will grow from $3.3 billion in 2011 to $20.6 billion in 2015. Google aims to grab the lion's share of that revenue.

"While regulatory pressures, competition and investment spending are likely to continue to weigh on shares near term, we believe accelerating growth driven by search, mobile, display and local ... will begin to overwhelm those concerns," Terry wrote in a research note issued June 27.

One of the core drivers in this mobile revenue market will be mobile payments, which Google expects to leverage via its Google Wallet service in conjunction with its Google Offers service this summer.

Launching in New York and San Francisco soon, Google Wallet enables consumers to pay for goods by tapping their phone against a point-of-sales terminal. Google Offers is a Groupon-like service that targets Google users with local deals.

On any normal day, Canaccord's forecasting would appear bullish, but now it appears bold and gutsy. The Federal Trade Commission June 24 opened an antitrust investigation into Google's search business.

Early indications are that the agency will have a hard time proving its case and extracting damages from the search engine, but a finding of anticompetitive behavior could result in large fines and possible injunctions. It's unclear how that would affect a company of Google's size and scale online.

Meanwhile, it's full speed ahead for Google on the mobile front. The company has seen its Android platform appear on more than 300 devices, with 400,000 Android gadgets launching every day.

Baidu sits in one of the world’s most lucrative and largest online markets for sheer user volume alone.The country boasts over a whopping 450 million users and is every ecommerce solution’s playground. While many sectors are still in their early stages of development,the potential for growth is huge.
Industry experts predict the online travel industry will be the next to take off in China in the near future as more and more consumers are beginning to use the web for their travel needs. The Qunar investment will give Baidu a stronghold in this specific market along with expanding its ecommerce efforts, as the company has been on a mission this year to do.

Baidu Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Li said: “Travel has long been one of the top categories on Baidu, and the number of travelers in China has been growing very rapidly, so this is a market of obvious strategic importance to us.” According to research firm iResearch, Qunar was rated as China’s number one travel site in March based on the number of unique visitors it receives daily, listing more than 11,000 air routes and 102,000 hotels worldwide.

However Baidu is not without its major competitors. China’s heaviest hitters also with leading ecommerce solutions in various sectors are companies like Tencent and Alibaba Group, both having Baidu set on their radars.

Tencent made an $84.4 million investment in Qunar rival and online travel company eLong in May, a company Expedia also holds a leading stake in. Meanwhile, Alibaba Group has been in development of its own search technology in order to compete directly with Baidu’s leading search engine. It seems the competition is encroaching on their territory but Baidu’s investments are just part of its master plan to aggressively expand further into the ecommerce sector.

On Sunday, May 16th, the Jason Taylor Foundation celebrated their 7th annual charity dinner & auction at the new Martorano"s Italian-American Kitchen located at the Seminole Paradise Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL. This dinner event kicked off Jason Taylor"s Celebrity Golf Classic and was appropriately titled "Nothing but the Best!" The owner of the restaurant, Steve Martorano, was not kidding when he said his restaurant is known for their delicious meatballs. During the night, many of Jason Taylor"s close friends and fellow football players were in attendance to support his foundation. This annual two-day event benefits the Jason Taylor Foundation, Holtz Children"s Hospital and Take Stock in Children.

In 2009, the Jason Taylor Foundation contributed nearly $350,000 in programs and services to a variety of organizations dedicated to serving our community"s children in need. The foundation also donated $50,000 to the Jason Taylor Children"s Learning Center (located at the Holtz Children"s Hospital) in Miami to provide an educational and recreational haven for hospitalized children facing extensive stays.
